Connecticut SPJ awards

The Connecticut Post of Bridgeport, The Day of New London and The News-Times of Danbury won the most awards from the Connecticut chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists in its 2008 Excellence in Journalism competition.

The Post won 34 awards, including 10 for first place. The Day had 30 awards, nine for first place. The News-Times had eight first-place awards, and 24 awards overall.

The Advocate of Stamford won 18 awards, the Journal Inquirer of Manchester won 15, and The Register Citizen of Torrington and The Hartford Courant both won 13 times among Connecticut newspapers.

Winners of individual awards include the Courant’s Kevin Hunt, who won the Stephen A. Collins Public Service award for the story “No More John Doe.” The Theodore Driscoll Investigative award went to Lee Howard of the Day for his work on how the Pfizer company used visas to attract foreign workers who were taking American jobs. James H. Smith, then of the Connecticut Post, won the First Amendment award for his columns calling for open government.

Fairfield University’s college newspaper, The Fairfield Mirror, won 15 awards.
