Globe, Herald dominate Boston Press Photographers awards

The Boston Globe and Boston Herald have won the most awards in the 2008 Boston Press Photographers Association competition.

The Globe was honored 28 times, including eight first-place awards among 15 categories. The Boston Herald was recognized 12 times, with two first-place awards.

Other Massachusetts newspapers honored included the MetroWest Daily News of Framingham, Mass.; the Patriot Ledger of Quincy, Mass.; and The Sun of Lowell, Mass.

The Globe’s John Tlumacki’s “Daddy, don’t leave me” – a shot of a young boy standing next to a row of soldiers – won picture of the year and first place in the general news category. Tlumacki won five awards in all.

Globe photographers also took first in the spot news, portrait/personality, pictorial, animal, team, multimedia, and feature categories. Thirteen Globe photographers were recognized, with two first-place awards for Bill Greene and two for Suzanne Kreiter. Essdras Suarez was honored twice, taking first once.

The Herald had seven photographers recognized in the contest. Faith Ninivaggi was honored twice, including a first-place award for sports picture story. Angela Rowlings was also honored twice, taking first in the EMS/fire category.

MetroWest’s Ken McGagh was recognized five times and finished first in the sports feature category.

The Ledger’s Greg Derr was recognized twice.
