John Layton, advertising director for The Westerly (R.I.) Sun, advised those in his audience at 'The New Rules to Succeed in Media Sales' workshop: 'You are a marketing consultant. We are a media company.' Layton was one of the six speakers at the first training session of the New England Newspaper and Press Association's new NENPA University.

Brian Cox, left, vice president of advertising/display at the Boston Herald, and Tim Brady, advertising director of the Eagle-Tribune of North Andover, Mass., make a point to the workshop audience using a slide showing the FedEx logo.

Christine Neves, classified integrated solutions manager of The Day of New London, Conn., shares a humorous comment, to the amusement of her audience.

Sean McKenna, advertising director for the Concord (N.H.) Monitor, leads one of the breakout sessions at the advertising sales workshop. During his talk to the entire workshop audience, McKenna suggested the ad representatives think like their customers and ask themselves, ‘Would I do business with me?’

Mark French, advertising director of The Republican of Springfield, Mass., gestures in making a point to participants in one of the breakout sessions. French told the full workshop audience: ‘It is harder to get a customer back than to get a new customer.’

Women in one of the breakout sessions are an attentive audience.

Some of the 31 participants who attended NENPA University’s first training workshop react with laughter and applause to the presentations.
